The Franz Hirtzberger Story
Franz Junior, his wife and children, are well-established in the family home, while his parents, Franz and Irmgard, have moved to their new house, near the Axpoint vineyard. The older generation, though, is still fully engaged. Together they preside over a small 12 hectare estate in the South Western end of the Wachau. This is one of the most famous estates of Austria. The vineyards are set on spectacularly steep and narrow terraces above the Danube, and the cultivation of the vines is extremely labour-intensive. Each vine in Singerriedel is individually tended and inspected around one hundred times in the season, and this attention to detail translates into wines of world-class quality which are absolutely true to their terroir.
Franz Hirtzberger Wines
Harvests here can be very late – into early December in some years – and a proportion of botrytis affected fruit (noble rot) is usually included in the wine. Riesling Singerriedel is the estate’s flagship wine, perhaps the finest Riesling in Austria. Splendid wines in all the last few vintages, though some tiny quantities in the Smaragd wines will put us under pressure to offer continuity.
